Kia ora koutou,

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday 5! Where we celebrate all the wonderful on-going work at the NRHCC.

1. Kua tae mai te wā o Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori! Te reo Māori language week starts next Monday from 12-18th of September. It's also 50 years ago since a petition with 30,000 signatures was handed to Parliament, calling for Te Reo Māori to be taught in schools. For Te Wiki o te Reo Māori this year, we are basing it on Te Whare Tapa Whā or the four pillars of hauora (health) model coined by Sir Mason Durie in 1984. Each day an email will be sent out with daily challenges and resources and the team will open the week with a special wananga on Zoom on Monday morning. Look out for the Zoom invitation and daily emails. Ngā mihi nui!

2. The Anglican Trust for Women and Children (AWTC) is hosting a five-week trial called Te tepu na Hine (Hine’s Table), serving free hot kai for people in the Otahuhu community. It is being run in partnership with Kiwi Harvest who donates much of the food and a mobile kitchen from which the food is served. There are two community connectors at ATWC who we are fortunate to have working alongside Whānau HQ. They provide a link between Whānau HQ and MSD and can offer advice and direct links in with food, support and mental health support for those impacted by Covid-19.

3. Our very own Dr Anthony Jordan featured on One News on the last day of winter to talk about how tough it's been and looking forward to potential health challenges ahead. Dr Jordan explained that New Zealand had seen four times the number of cases of flu than we had seen in prior years but that we have fared pretty well. He said he NRHCC will continue to focus on Covid-19 and the emergence of new variants, as well as ensuring the healthcare system is “fit and able to deal with the challenges it has ahead”.

4. Former NRHCC clinicians Dr Andrew Old and Dr Rawiri Jansen provided the fortnightly Covid-19 update at a media stand up on Wednesday, with Dr Pete Watson. They outlined the latest Covid numbers, including hospitalisations, and provided context about what our international monitoring tells us about a potential next wave of Covid-19.

5. Step-tember kicked off this week, and well done to all the teams who Stepped up to take part in this challenge! Below are the rankings after the first week:

Reminder: For any teams with new starters or colleagues who aren’t on the existing distribution list please email these through to SRogers@adhb.govt.nz to be added to the Friday 5 distribution list.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Ngā mihi,

The PMO Team
